Enzo Fernandez has completed his move from Chelsea to Manchester City in a British record-equalling £125 million transfer.

The Argentina midfielder leaves Stamford Bridge after three and a half years with Chelsea and joins one of the Premier League’s most successful clubs of the modern era.

Speaking in his first interview after the transfer, Fernandez described the move as an emotional moment for both himself and his family.

He said he had always dreamed of playing for a club of Manchester City’s size and stature.

The comment is likely to attract attention because of the comparison it appears to draw with his former club Chelsea.

Fernandez said he was grateful for the opportunity and excited by what he had already seen during his first hours at City.

He also expressed confidence that the club can continue competing for major honours in the coming seasons.

Manchester City have won eight Premier League titles since 2011, most recently in the 2023-24 season, and have also lifted the Champions League.

Chelsea have enjoyed major success of their own, including five Premier League titles this century and two Champions League triumphs, but they failed to qualify for this season’s Champions League.

Fernandez departs Chelsea having won the Club World Cup and the UEFA Conference League during his time in London.

His transfer represents another major milestone in a career that has developed rapidly since his breakthrough with Argentina at the 2022 World Cup.

Fernandez was one of the standout young players in Qatar as Argentina won their third world title.

His performances earned him the tournament’s Young Player award and accelerated his rise at club level.

He moved from Benfica to Chelsea in January 2023 for a then British-record fee of £106.8 million.

Now, just a few years later, he has completed another enormous transfer, this time joining Manchester City for £125 million.

Fernandez also played an important role in Argentina’s run to the 2026 World Cup final.

He scored against England in the semifinal as Lionel Scaloni’s side reached another major international final.

At 25, Fernandez now enters a new phase of his career with City, where expectations will be high given both the transfer fee and the club’s recent record of competing for major trophies.

For Chelsea, the move closes a high-profile chapter involving one of the most expensive players in the club’s history.

For City, it adds another elite midfielder to a squad built to challenge domestically and in Europe.
